The Name Iolite comes from the Greek word ‘ios’ means Violet. Iolite is Violetish Blue in color. Iolite is called ‘Kakaneeli’ in Hindi, also called ‘Neeli’ at times. Iolite shows strong Pleochroism; Iolite shows three distinct colors (Violet – Yellow – Colorless) in different directions (Trichroic). Iolite has hardness of 7 – 7.5 on Moh’s scale. Refractive index (RI) ranges from 1.542 – 1.551 & Specific Gravity (SG) is 2.61. Iolite stones usually have good transparency.
