Tourmaline is an extremely complex borosilicate of Aluminium, Magnesium, Iron and copper. Tourmaline comes in almost every Color. Tourmaline shows Pleochroism, means that different colors/tones can be seen from different angles of the stone. Paraiba, originally from Brazil is the most famous Tourmaline, with a hue of neon light blue to green hue. This is followed by the bright pinks of Rubellite, the blues of Indicolite and the mixed colors of Watermelon tourmaline with pink and green resembling a Watermelon.

Tourmaline stone, a complex Silicate comes in maximum colors than any other gemstone, occurring in various shades of virtually every hue. Tourmaline’s colors have many different causes. It’s generally agreed that traces of iron, and possibly titanium, induce green and blue colors. Manganese produces Reds and Pinks, and possibly yellows. Some pink and yellow tourmalines might owe their hues to color centers caused by radiation, which can be natural or laboratory-induced. Pink Variety of Tourmaline is called Rubellite. Tourmaline has Parti colored varieties like watermelon tourmaline. Watermelon tourmaline is green on the outside and a delicious pink on the inside. Tourmaline crystallizes in the Trigonal system; no other common mineral has three-sided prisms. Hardness of Tourmaline is 7 – 7.5 on Moh’s scale. Tourmaline is anisotropic. Refractive Index (RI ) is 1.624 – 1.644. Specific Gravity range is 3.03 – 3.26 depending upon Color. Major Sources of Tourmaline are Ural Mountains, Brazil, Zambia, Pakistan, South – West Africa etc. Many tourmaline color varieties have inspired their own trade names. Rubellite is a name for Pink, Red, Purplish Red, Orangy Red, or brownish red tourmaline. Indicolite is dark violetish blue, blue, or greenish blue tourmaline. Schorl is Black Tourmaline. Paraíba is an intense violetish blue, greenish blue, or blue tourmaline from the state of Paraíba, Brazil.
